The brazen serpent had been carefully preserved, as a memorial of God's goodness to their fathers in the wilderness; but it was idle and wicked to burn incense to it. All helps to devotion, not warranted by the word of God, interrupt the exercise of faith; they always lead to superstition and other dangerous evils. Human nature perverts every thing of this kind. True faith needs not such aids; the word of God, daily thought upon and prayed over, is all the outward help we need.

Yes, he destroyed it because people began to worship the object, not just look at it as a reminder of what it symbolized. I know this is a "jump out there", but I'm thinking that is why many do not agree with the "objects" that the Catholic religion incorporates?

Dennis is right on about he typological use of the snake - looking forward to Jesus death. There is another Old Testament place where "Moses Bronze Snake" is mentioned. Its in 2Kings 18:4... King Hezekiah destroys it...
Can you guess why?????
Take a look and see for yourself!!!!

I think that believing in God is the Key, not Moses using an Idol. In John 3:14-15, right before the famous John 3:16 verse, John uses the analogy of this act, to show that, like the Isrealites seeing Moses lift up a bronze snake and living, our belief in the resurrected Christ is how we gain eternal life.
