The brazen serpent had been carefully preserved, as a memorial of God's goodness to their fathers in the wilderness; but it was idle and wicked to burn incense to it. All helps to devotion, not warranted by the word of God, interrupt the exercise of faith; they always lead to superstition and other dangerous evils. Human nature perverts every thing of this kind. True faith needs not such aids; the word of God, daily thought upon and prayed over, is all the outward help we need.

Remember that just like when the people had to cross the Red Sea, sometimes the Lord requires some action to go along with the act of faith. I listened to Dan's message about Moses that he gave last April 26, 2009 and in it he talked about faith with action.

After the group who explored the land of Canaan came back with a report that showed fear and a lack of faith and the lack of action. They lacked the faith to go into the land to conquer it with the help of the Lord. The Lord spoke to Moses in 14 Numbers 11. The Lord says, "How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the miraculous signs I have performed among them? I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they." Moses asked the Lord to show the nations that He was (and is) slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. The Lord did forgive them, however, the people who rebelled were punished and did not see the land of Canaan.

Yes, he destroyed it because people began to worship the object, not just look at it as a reminder of what it symbolized. I know this is a "jump out there", but I'm thinking that is why many do not agree with the "objects" that the Catholic religion incorporates?

Dennis is right on about he typological use of the snake - looking forward to Jesus death. There is another Old Testament place where "Moses Bronze Snake" is mentioned. Its in 2Kings 18:4... King Hezekiah destroys it...
Can you guess why?????
Take a look and see for yourself!!!!

Good insight Kelly! "Living in faith even when it is the most unpopular, costly thing to do" - I may have to use that in a sermon some day! We miss you

I think that believing in God is the Key, not Moses using an Idol. In John 3:14-15, right before the famous John 3:16 verse, John uses the analogy of this act, to show that, like the Isrealites seeing Moses lift up a bronze snake and living, our belief in the resurrected Christ is how we gain eternal life.

I was telling someone at church yesterday that sometimes my prayers are just 'wave offerings' - Rather than an extended time in prayer, naming each person and each concern, I 'wave' them all before the Lord - something like 'Lord, bless and care for: my family, my friends, my neighborhood, my churches ...'

The wave offering in Exodus, however, as I read it ... it was waved before God (blessed) but not all burned up. The breast and thigh were given to the priests as their food portion.

I found out what a wave offering is. It involves having a Priest wave the first sheaf of grain, from the spring harvest, to be accepted by God. The sheaf was the "first fruits" of the harvest. The same term is used later in the bible in refering to Jesus Christ. ( But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the "first fruits" of those who have fallen asleep. 1 Corinthians 15:20 )

Noah, I agree with your main point, but I'd like to comment about "grumbling" about the Tabernacle and all the articles that go in it.
I was blessed when I read Exodus 28:3 about God telling Moses to "Tell all the skilled men to whom I have given wisdom in such matters ..." to make the priestly garments for Aaron. I immediately connected that to the idea of "vocation." God gives wisdom and ability to each of us to do something as a "job." Whether we be teachers or plumbers or bankers, God has gifted us, and will call upon us to use our gifts for him.

Hello Jennifer
My daughter, who just turned 18-years old a few weeks ago, grew up reading scripture. We read an age-appropriate Bible (appropriate for her when she was 8 that is) togetther until she turned about 12- or 13-years old. By then she was fully involved in Breakout. Lori Mason might have some suggestions as well. Hope this helps.
